Artist Statement
“Visiting familiar places with wiser eyes.”
Kendall Kennedy is a multidisciplinary artist based in Davis, California. Born and raised in Mint Hill, North Carolina. Kennedy’s work is concerned with childhood, memory, and identity as a queer person growing up in the heart of the south.
Interested in the concept of time capsules, Kennedy uses a collection of materials including paint, and family photos as a method of time travel. Kennedy is also experimental in the use of these materials, combining techniques such as embroidery, photo transfer, anthotype, and gelli printing to create her desired effect. Through her work she forges connections with lost memories of childhood and identity.
Kennedy’s most recent body of work began through an effort to immortalize childhood memories that hadn’t been documented, working solely from memory and public records to recreate or reimagine scenarios and locations of her growing up. In January of 2026 Kennedy was given the muse of her ongoing investigation: A flash drive containing over 15,000 photos from childhood and the early adult life of her mother. These photos had been previously locked on an outdated laptop and hadn’t been accessed in over 15 years. A time capsule, providing a new perspective on lived experiences. Kennedy refers to this ongoing body of work as Mom’s Archives and views it as a collaborative between mother and daughter.
